Late at Night.
Part of my comics final; the past several years, in a nutshell.
One of my followers asked me to post this on their behalf. A white girl in Australia’s “African” themed 21st birthday party, which she titled “This is Africa…. my 21st :)”
Attendees were all asked to wear “African themed” clothing to depict the continent and this is what resulted… blackface, elephant and gorilla costumes, warpaint, native American headdresses (?!) and more…. I’m at a loss for words.
And yes, this is from 2013.
The girl posted the pictures proudly and flatly refused to take them down when confronted by another individual about how they were racist apparently. Pictures were reported to facebook weeks ago and they still have not been taken down.
In case you ever wanted to know how white folks saw us black Africans… here you go.
I won’t comment on the PAX controversy (yet..) but here are some shots of a few of the outfits wore there. I’m lucky to have a partner that not only puts up with my crap, but also dresses up with me (as long as I put together his outfits haha). And I gotta say, he makes a great Gumshoe.

Finally read the latest issue of Young Avengers. I wasn’t on tumblr to check fan reaction or anything beforehand, so the last page was a total “Whuuuuu?” moment, but then I thought “Oh. This is interesting. I wonder where they’re going with this.” And then I saw the reactions of people on tumblr and like… does the internet just amplify the cray?
I’m a pretty big fan of Billy and Teddy. Love ‘em to death. But the way some of the people on tumblr were reacting to the issue just confuses me. I mean… KG has stated that he loves Billy and Teddy as a couple. Those two have appeared time and time again with eachother as well. When you think of one, you think of the other. Creating drama within their perfect dynamic is probably needed as they were too “ideal” and “vanilla” most of the time. Gotta test a relationship to know how strong it is, right? Those of us in relationships know that no couple is perfect, and their flaws and fights make for a more realistic/relatable pair.
But like. Most of all. It’s a fuggin comic book with fictional characters that has a story arc and goes through multiple issues. “THEY KISSED? WELL NOW THEY ARE IN LOVE THE END.”
WHY ARE PEOPLE CRAZY. THESE ARE STORIES. JUST SIT AND SEE WHERE IT GOES MAYBE?
tl;dr Reactions of cray peeps on tumblr shocked me more than the last page of YA#8 did
Made this for Save Point, a pixel art show at Floating World Comics in Portland. It’ll be on August 1st and it’s curated by the wonderful Sloane Leong. The theme was “Adventure into the Unknown” and I thought I’d have a little fun playing around with the interpretation, haha. I hope it’s cute! If you’re in the Portland area, visit the show and pick up some prints of all the awesome art that’ll be there!
